What Are the California State Requirements for HVAC Technician Certification?
To become a certified HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technician in California, candidates must meet certain requirements set forth by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB).
- Education and Training: Candidates must complete a minimum of two years of on-the-job training or have completed an HVAC program at an accredited trade school or college. The training must include both classroom instruction and hands-on experience.
- Work Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of four years of practical experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, or repair under the supervision of a licensed HVAC contractor.
- Exam: Candidates must pass a two-part exam that covers HVAC laws and regulations, trade knowledge, and business management. The first part of the exam is a law and business exam, and the second part is a trade-specific exam.
- License Application: After completing the education, training, work experience, and passing the exam, candidates must submit a license application to the CSLB, along with the required fees and documents.
- Insurance and Bonding: To be licensed, HVAC technicians must provide proof of liability insurance and a contractor’s bond. The minimum bond amount is $2,500.
- Continuing Education: Licensed HVAC technicians must complete at least 32 hours of continuing education every two years to renew their licenses. The courses must be approved by the CSLB and cover topics related to HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair.
To become a certified HVAC technician in California, candidates must complete education and training, gain practical work experience, pass a two-part exam, submit a license application, provide proof of insurance and bonding, and complete continuing education requirements. Meeting these requirements ensures that HVAC technicians in California are knowledgeable, skilled, and qualified to perform HVAC work safely and effectively.
